H E I M A T L I E D
DER DEUTSCHEN IN KROATIEN

Author Unknown
Contributed by Zeljko Hamata

Auf, Kroatiens deutsche Scharen,
Lasst uns stehen Hand in Hand!
Was einst unsere Ahnen waren,
Sind wir noch im Slawenland.
Deutsch ist unser Tun und Sprechen,
Deutsch sind wir in Art und Sinn;
Nie mit deutscher Treu zu brechen,
Sei uns heiliger Gewinn.

Aus gar manchen deutschen Gauen
Zogen unsere Väter aus.
Zwischen Drava und Sav’ zu bauen
Kamen sie aus Schwaben, Bayern,
Ihrer neuen Heimat Haus,
Pfalz und Ungarn, Böhmerland,
Aus der Batschka deutschen Weilern,
Fernher aus Karpatenland.

Machte sie auch Mundart scheiden,
Ihre Tracht verschieden sein,
Wollten sie doch nimmer leiden,
Nicht desselben Volks zu sein.
Eines Volkes, eines Blutes,
Deutsch bis in das tiefste Mark,
Fleissig, treu und festen Mutes,
Machte sie ihr Volkstum stark.

Um zu hüten und zu hagen,
Was sie hier für uns vollbracht,
Was zum Heile und zum Segen
Ihren Kindern sie vermacht,
Soll in unsern Herzen flammen,
Was ihr Beispiel uns gelehrt:
Treu dem Volk, dem wir entstammen,
Treu der Heimat, die uns nährt!

THE HOMELAND SONG
of
The Germans in Croatia

Poetical translation by
Henry A. Fischer

Let the scattered multitudes of Germans in Croatia
Stand together, hand in hand.
The very thing our ancestors were
We continue to be in this land of Slavs.
German is our identity and our language
We are German by race and perception
And we will not be separated from one another
Nor from our highest duty to stand together.

From many and various regions
Our forebears ventured here
Between the Sava and Drava Rivers
To find and create a new home
Whether they came from Swabia,
Bavaria, the Palatinate, Hungary
Bohemia and the Batschka
And Germans from far off Carpathian lands.

They did not abandon their dialect or language
Wore their various costumes as of old
Nor gave up their identity.
One people united by one blood.
German to the core!
Industriousness, faithfulness and courageousness
Strengthened this sense of who they were.

It is now ours to guard and treasure.
This inheritance they have left their children
For our wellbeing and as a lifelong blessing.
May their example be our inspiration
A burning flame within our hearts
Loyal to our people of which we are a part
Loyal to our homeland that nourishes us.
